The New 49ers Stadium Anthem: A win for the Filipinos?

Was debating whether to save this topic for the next episode of OneTake Tonight, but I said “fuck it.” It’s too hype of a topic not to share via the blog. Shoutout to Danny Dials for the idea. Last week, two artists (who are also Bay Area natives) Saweetie and P-Lo dropped a new single titled “Do It For the Bay.” This banger of a song ended up becoming the brand new 49ers Stadium Anthem, as the season wraps up.

I’ve listened to this single a couple of times already and each time it gets me pretty hyped up. But what gets me even more hyped up is the fact that both artists are representing the Filipino community. If you didn’t know, Saweetie is actually half Filipino (from her mother’s side). P-Lo is very clearly Filipino, so no explanation needed there (I actually even knew a few dudes from high school that looked like him). Obviously, both artists are originally from the Bay Area as well (a prerequisite if you are going to produce a song for the local pro sports teams). Saweetie grew up moving around the Bay Area a lot, living in different cities such as Union City, Hayward, San Jose, etc. P-Lo was raised in the small, but thriving East Bay city of Pinole.

I don’t really listen to Saweetie that much and I didn’t even know she was part Asian until recently. However, she made quite the contribution to this song and you’ve got to respect her for how far she’s come as an artist (can’t forget that she was also the featured artist on SNL during the beginning of December 2021). I’m definitely more familiar with P-Lo, having listened to his other popular tracks throughout my high school and college years. For real though, I remember they would slap P-Lo’s music at our proms and other formal dances. One of my all time favorite songs by him is Put Me on Somethin’ with Vallejo native E-40. I also liked his feature on a track called Power, with G-Eazy and Nef the Pharaoh (who are also from the Bay). Honestly though, you can’t hate on this guy. I remember when he performed at the University of San Francisco, and brought one of my buddies up on stage with him. That was hype.

“Do It For the Bay” will end up being one of those songs that gets everyone fired up (even years after its release), whether they hear it in the stadium stands, a local night club, or even in the car. It will be up there with “Big Steppin’ “ by Stunnaman02, which was the official Niner’s Stadium Anthem in prior years. By the way, Stunnaman is also a San Francisco Fillmore native and even went to my highschool, shoutout to him. Anyway, on behalf of the Filipinos, we’d like to thank these two successful artists for dropping this new song.

God Bless the Filipinos,

God Bless the Niners,

Producer Reese out.
