The 2024 NBA Finals are about to tip in Boston - With a long layoff this week in between both series, there's been plenty of time to speculate and get the picks from the experts, and one thing has become clear: the media now loves Kyrie Irving and the Dallas Mavericks (picks today on ESPN):
Media pundits love talking the redemption story... love 'this guy was a dickhead, now he's changed' narrative - why are we all such suckers for this? It's a mistake in our collective wiring of our brains (may need to get our readers a copy of 'Against Empathy' by Paul Bloom). Don't know about you, but I prefer guys who just were never dickheads, who never destroyed teams from the inside out, who never lied about re-signing, talk about getting their number retired at the opening press conference, who never tried to make it all about him when talking about one's heritage, who never re-posted antisemitic literature out to his massive following, who never set back an organization for 3-4 years after getting his hands on it then leaving to destroy another franchise down the road in Brooklyn:
This guy is the worst - the north remembers, Kyrie! But I sneaky love how the Celtics are staying quite and just going about their business like they do... handling all the Kyrie attention brilliantly:
The Celtics have put in the work - they have the framework, they have the program - 1 year ago, the Mavericks were tanking for a better draft pick, Luka was complaining that he 'wasn't having fun anymore' (after Kyrie showed up), and selling their franchise - not to mention all this talk about Doncic and Irving as 'the greatest scoring backcourt of all time' - bananas. Celtics were out getting better - as they have been for the last 7 years.
