Short King of the Month: Marty Scorsese

I’m very happy to introduce this new category of blogs called “short king of the month.” As a key member in the short king community (I have not yet earned title as leader yet), I feel like it is my obligation to recognize my fellow short kings out there and show them the appreciation that they deserve. Now here is the burning question: what counts as a short king? As in, what is the height requirement? Personally, I don’t have a great answer for that. A lot of Marina babes might say that anything under 6’ would make you a short king, but I beg to differ. I think that most people would agree that 5’7” and below is short king territory. But we’re not here to debate this topic (not today at least). We’re here to kick off the category and show appreciation for one of the OG short kings. 

November happens to be the birth month of a legend, a national hero in the world of film making really, fuckin’ Martin “Marty” Scorsese. What a gangster. I don’t even know where to start here. Standing at a solid 5 foot 4, this G has directed 26 feature length narrative films and 17 feature length documentaries since 1967. If this doesn’t shout “body of work,” I don’t know what does. Scorsese is literally in the 0.1 percent of directors who will make more than 20 movies in their lifetime. The majority of directors (close to 60 percent) will only make 1 before they die. 

Even if you’ve never heard of his name, most of us have probably watched at least one Scorsese movie without even knowing it. Some of my personal favorites include: The Departed, Goodfellas, and The Wolf of Wall Street- probably in this order too (most favorite to least favorite). One aspect of film making where Scorsese never misses, is in his ability to cast the right actors for the roles he has. Probably a cliche thing to say, but the actor-character selection in those last 3 movies I mentioned was “cast-iron”: I couldn't see any other actors playing those roles. I mean Jack Nicholson in The Departed - phenomenal, all of the Italian legends featured in Goodfellas - outstanding. Scorsese don’t miss. 

Scorsese puts the “king” in “short king” when it comes to movies, can’t argue with that. He may be 5’4”, but he probably needs to carry a suit case with him to hold all of his big dick energy, wherever he goes. Happy 81st birthday to a legend.
