Jan/Feb in Stockton: Producer Reese Central Valley Update

I wrote another one of these back in October and I’ve become a sneaky fan of sharing a couple short updates in one sitting, ever since. So let’s get into it. If I recall correctly, this time of the year in Stockton is kind of the transition point from bone-chilling dry, cold weather to mildly wet half-sunny, half-gloomy weather.

Speaking of weather, an atmospheric river event is supposed to creep through most of the Central Valley this weekend. Many residents of Stockton are preparing for lots of heavy rain and extreme winds. I remember when we had a couple of these atmospheric river storms last year (pretty much around the same time of the year), which left many cars and homes flooded. A good number of schools were also forced to close down. Fortunately, I was not affected by any of these elements. For those who don’t know, an atmospheric river is a vast, narrow section of Earth’s atmosphere which can transport moisture from the tropics (near the equator) to the poles (the northernmost and southernmost points of the Earth).

Now that we’re on the topic of extreme weather, it’s worth mentioning that the boys and I made our monthly shooting trip up to the forest this past month. Boy, was it fuckin’ snowing. We did check the forecast prior to making the drive up, but weren’t expecting a full-fledged blizzard (visibility sucked on the road btw). In spite of the snow, we still managed to reach our spot safely, shoot a little, and play in the snow a little. Take this as a PSA to: Visit your California National Parks in the winter time, they’re beautiful. Also don’t forget to get a good set of mud tires on your vehicle (or throw on some snow chains) - these tight roads leading to the forest sucked!

Great snow day with the boys!

In other news, a substitute teacher at John Adams Elementary School (within SUSD) was sent to the ER this past week, after one of her students attacked her. I’ve voiced my concerns about Stockton Unified before, in a previous blog, and stories like this just further my case. But anyway, after trying to get a student to cooperate during a free period (there was no learning/teaching going on at the moment), the student first threatened the substitute's life and then later on, viciously attacked her. The substitute was treated for a concussion, a sprained wrist, and bruising. The substitute did not fight back (allegedly). The same questions come to mind after hearing about this: Does the school district require better leadership? Do we need to promote a higher level of ethical standards within these schools? Does security need to be stepped up? But I digress.

On a lighter note, the Stockton Brick Convention is coming to town this weekend, Stockton’s first ever lego convention. Professional lego artists from different parts of the country will come together to showcase their art work and creations. Tickets will run about $15 each and all the proceeds will be going to charity. I grew up on legos, and I will say they are the least dumb toy I’ve ever owned/played with as a kid. I only say that because they can invoke a pretty high level of creativity when you mess around with them, especially when you don’t follow the building instructions that they come with.

So that was my little update on what’s been going on in the Central Valley, I’ll see you on OneTake Tonight!

God bless,

Producer Reese
