Groundhogs Day in July: The 49ers QB Conundrum

Good looks, a happy life, and spouse are no guarantees in life. But these three things are; death, taxes, and talking about the San Francisco 49ers quarterback room.

Yup, its 2023.. training camp just kicked off.. the team has super bowl aspirations and the fan base is still obsessed with talking about one position and one position only. Yup, you guessed it! Quarterback!

I have been tuning into 95.7 on my morning commute to my real job (which some people who contribute to this company do have) and have had talk of the QB spot shoved down my throat non stop. So much to where it go to the point that I had to do a quick google search and triple check Jimmy G was in fact no longer on the team.

If you read my intro blog here you would know that I have been a lifelong 49ers fan. However, I have zero issue calling out both the team and at times this fucking fan base. I am about to go off course for a second but my ultimate point is important. So please bear with the poor grammar and at times rollercoaster type writing and just let me cook.

This fan base complains about the QB play more then maybe any fan base in the NFL and it's just wild. Nothing has ever been good enough, and the most bizarre thing is, it's seldom blame at the top. It is always blame on the individual.

They neglect the fact that we haven't had consistency at the QB position for more than 5 years in a few decades now at this point. They ran Alex Smith out of town, turned their back on Kap, and threw Jimmy G out with the baby and the bathwater. All three of them brought us back to a game (NFCCG) that fans my age had never seen before, ever. And two of them took us to a god damn Super Bowl. Not good enough for this fan base. This is also the same fan base who never fully embraced Steve Young lol.

I guess thats the effect of having one of the greatest QB's of all time suit up for your franchise. It leaves folks in a pool of disillusion and overall stupidity at times. This theory I just mentioned is supported by the knuckleheads from Boston who sometimes contribute to this site as well.

  • The fact that 1) they wont STFU about some old guy with botox who doesn't play for them any more
  • 2) One of them (who is a smarter fan and better representation of the area) hates their current QB who is young and by no means total dog shit.

What is the old saying? If you give a mouse a crumb, or maybe its a cookie? You get my point.

Back to the basis for this blog. To my surprise last week Shanahan and Lynch both said Brock was fully cleared. Yeah, fully cleared.. they have a plan for him to where he isn't throwing two consecutive days in a row but he was out there today. In pads, running 11 on 11 scrimmages. Bro... what, how, what?

Considering the mania that Brock casted over the Bay Area during Mr Irrelevants 2022 playoff run you would think people would be happy? Nope, in fact thats quite the opposite. Yeah people are pissed off, about all sorts of things that I don't quite understand. Some people are saying he's rushing back, that he isn't ready. And also others have started chiming in saying maybe him going 8-0 as a starter in every game that he finished was a fluke. In fact, this one got me.. someone from Napa called into 95.7 today and said that Shanahan hurt Trey Lance on purpose. Hah, buddy if you ever read this please get ahold of me.

During today's 11 on 11 people are now saying Trey Lance had his best practice yet. And some are saying Brock struggled, others are saying he had a good practice and bounced back as he attempts to "shake the rust". I just don't understand how one day its people complaining that Shanahan isn't giving Lance enough reps, a fair shake, etc. Other days its Brock is the next Joe Montana. And then hell, there have been a few Darnold could in fact "have it" takes that have circulated.

Guys, can we fucking pick a side and stick to it? Would it pain us to have some consistency? This ESPN/Fantasy Sports era has twisted the way that we as fans view reality and watch sports. It makes me truly sick to my stomach.

Here are my way too early QB predictions for the rest of minicamp and into the 2023 season:

  • Purdy will be the starter week 1, period no questions asked
  • Purdy will take a few steps back, he won't win every game but he is someone we can build around if he stays healthy
  • I do think Trey Lance got better and I am rooting for Trey Lance, he wins the QB2 battle and provides a solid back up should Brock not stay healthy
  • I don't care what Sam Darnold does lol he won't be taking QB1 snaps with the 49ers

I should also let you all know that I was upset Steph Curry was drafted by the Warriors way back because I loved Monta Ellis. Aka, I am an idiot so if I am wrong this doesn't count. Obviously

Like they say in business, bottom line up front or BLUF; everyone fucking relax. QB isn't going to be an issue guys!

Niners really should've signed TB12 in 2020... they'd probably have 2 super bowls to show for it at this point
